What's Your Emergency Plan?

A recent news story about a pontoon boat that sank in Florida, is a good reminder that all boaters should have an emergency plan. While everyone made it safely off the boat thanks to help from some good Samaritan boaters in the area, this story could have had a tragic ending. Reports say that from the time the pontoon boat was spotted in distress until it was completely submerged in the water was just five minutes.

Make sure that you have enough life jackets on board for all passengers. Distress flares and air horns will help you get the attention of other boats in the area. Waterproof containers will keep valuables dry in the event of a problem.

Although the unexpected can happen anywhere, never underestimate the power of water. In the case of that sinking boat in Florida the boat was anchored when a rogue wave hit. Changing tides can be dangerous. Be alert at all times, and familiarize yourself with currents and local dangers.
